Alan Bennett is regarded as Britain's most critically respected and most popular living playwright,

famed for creating real, dramatic characters through thought-provoking situations and language readily

understood by audiences.

A Chip in The Sugar tells the story of mild, middle-aged Graham Whittaker, who finds life becoming

complicated as his widow-mother, with whom he still lives, reunites with a dubious old flame, Frank

Turnbull. Graham becomes increasingly jealous when Mr Turnbull takes an ever-growing hold on

Mam. But Mr Turnbull is hiding a dark secret...

A Lady of Letters, introduces us to Irene Ruddock, a single, middle-aged woman who is not afraid to

speak, or rather to write, her mind. She frequently writes to her MP, the police, the chemist…everyone

she can, to remedy the social ills she sees around her. But her letter writing is to get her into rather a lot

of trouble...
