North West Opera presents
I am a poet and she is poetry...
Founded in 2008 after the runaway success of Duelling Divas (September 2007, Balor Theatre, Ballybofey) and Mozart's Magic Flute (September 2008, An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny), North West Opera has become a strong creative presence in the north with a series of operatic concerts by The Bavarian Operatic Repertory Company (September 2009) and performances of Engelbert Humperdinck‘s Hansel and Gretel (October 2009, Balor Theatre, Ballybofey). Now North West Opera is delighted to bring their new production of La Boheme to The Waterside Theatre in October 2010. Recognised for their innovative links with local performers and award-winning school choirs, North West Opera focuses on making opera accessible, enjoyable and educational. La Boheme - by Giacomo Puccini - has often been described as the perfect opera. Unbearably sad; delicately, achingly joyful, the opera takes place on Christmas Eve 1830 in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Four young friends laugh, love, and play together as they trace the sharp edge of starvation in their freezing garret. Rodolfo (a writer and one of the young men), meets Mimi (a poor seamstress who lives in the highest garret in the building) when she stops at his flat to get a light for her candle. Their story of love and loss allows us to re-experience the glory and pain of being human and in love. I am a poet and she is poetry," Rodolfo says of Mimi. In the capable hands of North West Opera, a lyrical evening awaits opera lovers and novices alike.
