Stimulating creativity, sparking imaginations, broadening horizons. Welcome to the Waterside Theatre’s Community Arts Department.

The Waterside Theatre delivers a large variety of art programs based on local need.  Through working with local stakeholders, partnership organisations, and local community groups we ensure that some of the most marginalised and isolated in society are able to benefit from being involved in high quality arts activities.  These projects will give you a sense of the range and variety of our work:

Intergenerational Art Projects:  The Waterside Theatre delivers a dedicated programme of activities in care home settings with local primary schools.  These projects allow older adults an opportunity to participate in a meaningful activity to ensure that they remain productive, useful and contributing members of society. Through high quality intergenerational art workshops we promote the transmission of cultural traditions and values from older people to the younger generations.

Telling Tales Theatre Project: This drama based project engages with older people living throughout the Derry City and Strabane District Council area, to include those living in areas of high deprivation and rural areas, an opportunity to participate in meaningful activity to ensure that they remain productive, useful and contributing members of society.

Diversity Youth Drama:  Young people from different ethnic backgrounds represented in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area (to include Polish, Chinese and Indian communities as well as Northern Irish Catholics and Protestants) come together in drama based workshops designed to use the arts as a means to explore different cultural backgrounds and to break down barriers and stereotypes amongst different cultures.  The goal of the project is to promote intercultural dialogue leading to the integration of marginalized ethnic communities with the indigenous population. 

Music Therapy and Drama:  Through this project we deliver a year round timetable of arts activities to young people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities and ensure that these young people have the opportunity to live lives as full as possible.  The multi-disciplinary art programme encourages social skills, builds confidence and uses movement, performance and sound to encourage imaginative thought.

Schools Outreach Programmes:  Throughout the year the Waterside Theatre delivers high quality arts to schools throughout the Derry City and Strabane District Council Area.
